Day 5 - Hebrews 3:11 - 3:19

Hebrews 3:11-19

11 So in my anger I took an oath:
‘They will never enter my place of rest.’”
12 Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. 13 You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. 14 For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ. 15 Remember what it says:

“Today when you hear his voice,
    don’t harden your hearts
as Israel did when they rebelled.”

16 And who was it who rebelled against God, even though they heard his voice? Wasn’t it the people Moses led out of Egypt? 17 And who made God angry for forty years? Wasn’t it the people who sinned, whose corpses lay in the wilderness? 18 And to whom was God speaking when he took an oath that they would never enter his rest? Wasn’t it the people who disobeyed him? 19 So we see that because of their unbelief they were not able to enter his rest.

Terrie's Comments:

I think that the writer had every right to warn us over again to be careful that we don`t turn away from God.  We, as humans are so fickle and so quickly turn away from what we held fast to yesterday.  Just like the Israelite's who saw that mighty hand of God first hand, we too praise God one moment and then our actions seem to proclaim a different truth.

In Verse 13 I find it interesting how the writer links being deceived by sin as a fore runner to us being hardened against God.  This is why we need to be consistently renewing our mind by reading the word of God (the Bible) and taking every thought captive so that all our thoughts line up with God`s word and His will.  When we do this then our actions automatically show a life of faith in Jesus Christ and we will share in all that God has for us in the end.

GO PRO!  (something that the Holy Spirit impressed in my devo time years ago)
P - Pray continually - always aware of God`s presence with you and ready to lay everything at His feet.

R- Read God`s Word Daily!  Know God`s word so that you are able to take every thought captive into obedience to Jesus Christ.  Most battles are won and lost at this level.

O- Obey God`s word!  Put what you are reading, learning and what is revealed to you through scripture into practice :-)

Tori's Comments:
'deceived by sin' (vs. 13) ...know the truth! If we know what's what, when Satan comes around with his lies, we'll know just what to say:

I mean, I ain't gonna be in no fire. Not today.

As far as friendship goes, warning each other daily seems the opposite of what we do. Instead of encouraging and looking out for each other, there seems to be a lot of selfishness and tearing down.  There's power in our words and the culture says it's ok for friends to mock each other... but that's not what the Bible says.  Calling each other harsh things can drain a person, not lift them up.  Make that your goal. I know I've got a lot of changes to make.

Day 4 - Hebrews 3:1 - 3:10

Hebrews 3:1-10

Chapter 3
And so, dear brothers and sisters who belong to God and are partners with those called to heaven, think carefully about this Jesus whom we declare to be God’s messenger and High Priest. 2 For he was faithful to God, who appointed him, just as Moses served faithfully when he was entrusted with God’s entire house.

3 But Jesus deserves far more glory than Moses, just as a person who builds a house deserves more praise than the house itself. 4 For every house has a builder, but the one who built everything is God.

5 Moses was certainly faithful in God’s house as a servant. His work was an illustration of the truths God would reveal later. 6 But Christ, as the Son, is in charge of God’s entire house. And we are God’s house, if we keep our courage and remain confident in our hope in Christ.

7 That is why the Holy Spirit says,

“Today when you hear his voice,
8     don’t harden your hearts
as Israel did when they rebelled,
when they tested me in the wilderness.
9 There your ancestors tested and tried my patience,
even though they saw my miracles for forty years.
10 So I was angry with them, and I said,
‘Their hearts always turn away from me.

They refuse to do what I tell them.’

Tori's Comments:

"But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. And we are His house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast." (vs.6)

If He is the author, we are His story. If He is the builder, we (the church) are His house.  I'm assuming by 'holding onto hope', he was referring to the persecution facing the church at the time, which makes sense. And I see how that relates to today, not just in the face of persecution, but in how the world around me can sometimes seem draining. It's just so....depressing. And I have to remember the joy God promises to fill us with.
But boasting of hope? What is our hope? This will take some thinking time on my part. Please enlighten me in the comments if you get the gist of it. I think I get that our hope is the future God promises us, and also His promise that we can come boldly before the Lord, washed clean. But is boasting the same as spreading the good news and making disciples? Or is it something bigger or different?

Terrie's Comments:

Just as Moses was a faithful servant while he worked in the house of God, Jesus is faithful and is over God`s house as a Son.  We are His house if we keep our confidence and boasting only in our hope in Jesus.  Because Jesus is God`s Son and not a servant like Moses was Jesus is greater than Moses was.

Don`t end up like the Israelite`s who ended up walking around a mountain aimlessly for 40 years because they rebelled against God and did not take Him at His word even after they had been delivered out of Egypt by many signs and wonders.... I wonder often what lies Satan whispered into their ears to get them to not trust God so quickly after they had been delivered... but that is kind of a shiny object that can be explored another time or maybe is not worth exploring at all.
