Day 16 - John 1:1-9

1 In the beginning the Word already existed.
    The Word was with God,
    and the Word was God.
2 He existed in the beginning with God.
3 God created everything through him,
    and nothing was created except through him.
4 The Word gave life to everything that was created,
    and his life brought light to everyone.
5 The light shines in the darkness,
    and the darkness can never extinguish it.
6 God sent a man, John the Baptist, 7 to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. 8 John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light. 9 The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.


Terrie's Comments:

This is one of my favorite passages in the Bible!  I am not sure if I can explain even part of the significance of this passage in a few brief comments.  I will try to touch on some of what I have seen here over time.

The Word here IS Jesus!  So in light of this fact what do we see about Jesus in these verses?

• Jesus existed in the beginning
• Jesus was with God 
• Jesus is God
• Jesus existed in the beginning with God (the Father)
• God (the Father) created everything through Jesus without exception.
• Jesus gave life to everything that was created and that life brings all of us as humans light
• That light that we have through Jesus shines in the darkness and will always overpower the darkness!
• John the Baptist came to tell about Jesus.  He was sent to testify of Jesus and tell them that the true light of the world had actually entered this world as a man!  
• This is only the beginning of the letter written by the one who refers to himself as "The one who Jesus loved"  This is the beginning of the Gospel as told by John :-)

Beautiful start... Man, all of these writings from John just put me in such a good mood! I want to go write, like, 10 poems.
