Day 1 - Hebrews 1:1 to 1:10

HERE WE GO!  Our first Christ Capp Bible Reading Challenge.

Main Purpose and Goal - to encourage everyone to read God's word regularly for themselves and encourage other's to do the same - Jesus said to go and make disciples.

Hebrews 1:1-10

1 Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. 2 And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe. 3 The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven. 4 This shows that the Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is greater than their names.

5 For God never said to any angel what he said to Jesus:

“You are my Son.
Today I have become your Father.
God also said,

“I will be his Father,
and he will be my Son.”
6 And when he brought his supreme Son into the world, God said,

“Let all of God’s angels worship him."
7 Regarding the angels, he says,

“He sends his angels like the winds,
his servants like flames of fire.”
8 But to the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever.
You rule with a scepter of justice.
9 You love justice and hate evil.
Therefore, O God, your God has anointed you,
pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else.”
10 He also says to the Son,

“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundation of the earth

and made the heavens with your hands.

Comments by Terrie:

Hebrews Chapter 1 is all about establishing in our hearts and our minds that Jesus Christ is the proven Son of God.  This is the foundation of Hebrews.  This is a letter to the Hebrews to help them get through a time of great trials, so to build their faith so they wouldn't lose heart.

In Chapter 1 we see a number of things established about Jesus:
-Beginning with Jesus being used by God to speak to us just as the prophets did in the Old Testament. Jesus was also there at the beginning with God. (v-1-2)
- We learn that Jesus reflects God perfectly and He alone is the one who purifies us and has taken away punishment for our sins.  He is now seated at the right hand of God (v3)
- We see that Jesus is greater than the angels (v4)
- God Himself declared that Jesus is His Son! (v5)
- All of God's angels worship Jesus (v6)
- Jesus is the one who created the angels and who gives them their power (v7)
- Jesus will reign forever and His throne will not end (v8)
- Jesus loves righteousness and hates evil and has been anointed by God with gladness.(v9)
- Jesus laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning and created the heavens too :-) (v10)
- .... more to come tomorrow!  But this alone is enough to say that Jesus is worthy of all of our praise, honor and glory forever!!

Comments by Tori:

``Sustaining all things by His powerful word" (vs. 3)

I don't have much to add but that this phrase stuck out at me. You see the power God's words have throughout the bible, from "Let there be light" to "Yes, I am coming soon."
And what I take from that is everything He says comes true, that the winds and the waves obey His voice, and when He says something, He means it.
Sometimes I don't feel like I can trust Him because I put His words on the same level as human promises which are easily broken. But God doesn't change. When He says He loves me, I have to believe. When He says He'll take care of me, I need to know in my heart that it's true. It hit me yesterday that the only reason my heart is beating is because God is giving me life constantly. I'm very big on analogies- it's how I learn best. And so I had an image pass through my head of humans as windup dolls, and God was a mechanic who came around and kept us all going.

a fabulous sketch done by yours truly

Silly, perhaps, but it clicked in my my head.  All throughout my today I've stopped and placed a hand over my heart, feeling it beat, using it as a reminder that I can trust God.

I love the def God gives of His son in vs 3. "He is the radiance of God's glory the EXACT respresentation of His being.
No questions about who Jesus is there and where He is seated.

Please keep all comments respectful. We want to remember that each of us is at a different place in our walk with God. This is a place for us to share openly about what has been revealed to us as we open up Gods word and to learn from others. Please take every opportunity possible to build each other up in love :-)
