Hebrews 3:1-10
Chapter 3
And so, dear brothers and sisters who belong to God and are partners with those called to heaven, think carefully about this Jesus whom we declare to be God’s messenger and High Priest. 2 For he was faithful to God, who appointed him, just as Moses served faithfully when he was entrusted with God’s entire house.
3 But Jesus deserves far more glory than Moses, just as a person who builds a house deserves more praise than the house itself. 4 For every house has a builder, but the one who built everything is God.
5 Moses was certainly faithful in God’s house as a servant. His work was an illustration of the truths God would reveal later. 6 But Christ, as the Son, is in charge of God’s entire house. And we are God’s house, if we keep our courage and remain confident in our hope in Christ.
7 That is why the Holy Spirit says,
“Today when you hear his voice,
8 don’t harden your hearts
as Israel did when they rebelled,
when they tested me in the wilderness.
9 There your ancestors tested and tried my patience,
even though they saw my miracles for forty years.
10 So I was angry with them, and I said,
‘Their hearts always turn away from me.
They refuse to do what I tell them.’

"But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. And we are His house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast." (vs.6)
If He is the author, we are His story. If He is the builder, we (the church) are His house. I'm assuming by 'holding onto hope', he was referring to the persecution facing the church at the time, which makes sense. And I see how that relates to today, not just in the face of persecution, but in how the world around me can sometimes seem draining. It's just so....depressing. And I have to remember the joy God promises to fill us with.
But boasting of hope? What is our hope? This will take some thinking time on my part. Please enlighten me in the comments if you get the gist of it. I think I get that our hope is the future God promises us, and also His promise that we can come boldly before the Lord, washed clean. But is boasting the same as spreading the good news and making disciples? Or is it something bigger or different?

Just as Moses was a faithful servant while he worked in the house of God, Jesus is faithful and is over God`s house as a Son. We are His house if we keep our confidence and boasting only in our hope in Jesus. Because Jesus is God`s Son and not a servant like Moses was Jesus is greater than Moses was.
Don`t end up like the Israelite`s who ended up walking around a mountain aimlessly for 40 years because they rebelled against God and did not take Him at His word even after they had been delivered out of Egypt by many signs and wonders.... I wonder often what lies Satan whispered into their ears to get them to not trust God so quickly after they had been delivered... but that is kind of a shiny object that can be explored another time or maybe is not worth exploring at all.

A common theme in what I have been learning this year is listening for the Holy Spirit and acting on it. So going along with this theme vs 7 and 8 stood out to me. I don't want to be someone who hardens my heart and misses out in what God has in store for me or in serving others.
ReplyDeleteListening to the Holy Spirit is a struggle for me. It's more leaning on the fact that sometimes my fear of what others will think drowns out that voice, and then I read something like this and become incredibly convicted. I'm supposed to be free from fear, but I fall into the trap of pleasing the world so easily.

ReplyDeleteTori remember FEAR is ALWAYS from Satan... it is his "love" language... false evidence appearing real. Perfect love casts out fear because it exposes the lies and covers you with the truth. In the end the only thing that really matters is what God thinks. All a part of resting in Jesus and all he accomplished at the cross! The more you understand and know who Jesus is the easier resting is to do.
