Hebrews 3:11-19
11 So in my anger I took an oath:
‘They will never enter my place of rest.’”
12 Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. 13 You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. 14 For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ. 15 Remember what it says:
“Today when you hear his voice,
don’t harden your hearts
as Israel did when they rebelled.”
16 And who was it who rebelled against God, even though they heard his voice? Wasn’t it the people Moses led out of Egypt? 17 And who made God angry for forty years? Wasn’t it the people who sinned, whose corpses lay in the wilderness? 18 And to whom was God speaking when he took an oath that they would never enter his rest? Wasn’t it the people who disobeyed him? 19 So we see that because of their unbelief they were not able to enter his rest.

I think that the writer had every right to warn us over again to be careful that we don`t turn away from God. We, as humans are so fickle and so quickly turn away from what we held fast to yesterday. Just like the Israelite's who saw that mighty hand of God first hand, we too praise God one moment and then our actions seem to proclaim a different truth.
In Verse 13 I find it interesting how the writer links being deceived by sin as a fore runner to us being hardened against God. This is why we need to be consistently renewing our mind by reading the word of God (the Bible) and taking every thought captive so that all our thoughts line up with God`s word and His will. When we do this then our actions automatically show a life of faith in Jesus Christ and we will share in all that God has for us in the end.
GO PRO! (something that the Holy Spirit impressed in my devo time years ago)
P - Pray continually - always aware of God`s presence with you and ready to lay everything at His feet.
R- Read God`s Word Daily! Know God`s word so that you are able to take every thought captive into obedience to Jesus Christ. Most battles are won and lost at this level.
O- Obey God`s word! Put what you are reading, learning and what is revealed to you through scripture into practice :-)

'deceived by sin' (vs. 13) ...know the truth! If we know what's what, when Satan comes around with his lies, we'll know just what to say:

I mean, I ain't gonna be in no fire. Not today.
As far as friendship goes, warning each other daily seems the opposite of what we do. Instead of encouraging and looking out for each other, there seems to be a lot of selfishness and tearing down. There's power in our words and the culture says it's ok for friends to mock each other... but that's not what the Bible says. Calling each other harsh things can drain a person, not lift them up. Make that your goal. I know I've got a lot of changes to make.

Vs 13 encourage one another daily
ReplyDeleteI'm with Tori more building up instead of tearing down.
Isn't it surprising how insulting your friends seems to be the norm? I'm trying to be better about it!
DeleteSarcasm is our national language... should it be? Is it edifying or should we, as Christ ambassador's be swimming against this trend? Just a question to ponder... I too speak the language of sarcasm quite fluently. I have been wrestling with it lately internally... and now publicly lol.
ReplyDeleteIt's something I've been thinking about lately...everyone does it, but when you think about it deeper, it certainly doesn't build anyone up, it just kind of is.
