Hebrews 4:1-10
4 God’s promise of entering his rest still stands, so we ought to tremble with fear that some of you might fail to experience it. 2 For this good news—that God has prepared this rest—has been announced to us just as it was to them. But it did them no good because they didn’t share the faith of those who listened to God. 3 For only we who believe can enter his rest. As for the others, God said,
“In my anger I took an oath:
‘They will never enter my place of rest,’”
even though this rest has been ready since he made the world. 4 We know it is ready because of the place in the Scriptures where it mentions the seventh day: “On the seventh day God rested from all his work.” 5 But in the other passage God said, “They will never enter my place of rest.”
6 So God’s rest is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God. 7 So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David much later in the words already quoted:
“Today when you hear his voice,
don’t harden your hearts.”
8 Now if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come. 9 So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. 10 For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world.

Oh man. Terrie can testify that this is an interesting time to read this passage.
Does it weigh on you?
Your friends, family, strangers on the street, may never experience God's rest?
It weighs on me. This may be the last time I ever see my classmates. What if they never learn of the love of God?
But the burden isn't enough. True love requires action, and I've noticed as this knowledge has made its way through my system that God will direct my steps if I'm willing to take them.
Does it weigh on you like it weighs on me?
I'm curious, as to what our rest should be like, should feel like. Any thoughts?
Terrie's Comments:
Am I resting?? Am I resting in the finished work of Jesus Christ or am I trying to do more, be more, be better all on my own? Am I waiting for other humans to meet my needs that God wants so desperately to meet? What does it look like to just rest and trust that God has already finished all the work.
That is what He wants is for us to fully rely on Him for everything. I wonder what it feels like to have already provided a way out but have so many of your children still drowning in fear, worry, anxiety, stress, unbelief, lack, work.... must be like watching someone drown in a foot of water... just stand up already!
God is just waiting for us to turn His way and trust Him with EVERYTHING..... yes this means giving up independence AND control.... We can do this TOGETHER. Reminding each other everyday that God is worth leaning on and HE IS DEPENDABLE!! JUST REST ALREADY.

I feel like this passage gives people who are burdened by the having sabbath on a certain day relief. This talks more about God's mercy and grace and our free access to him daily. Not saying that it is an easy thing to remember to rest in him daily. But He is there waiting for us to rest, in peace and just be held.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I am done day 7:)
ReplyDeleteI need to remember to remain in the "habit" (for lack of a better word) of taking EVERYTHING... no matter how big or how small it is to the throne of God FIRST... We need to train ourselves so that bringing EVERYTHING to God FIRST is our knee jerk reaction instead of our back up plan when our human plans fail to solve the problem.
